Kayaking the Royal Canal

The Royal Canal runs 146km from Dublin to the River Shannon. There are 46 locks on this canal. Our 3 day kayak trip started at Ballymahon (just before lock 39) and ended at Enfield (after lock 18) a distance of 90km and 21 locks in a west to east direction. Kayaks are not permitted to pass through the locks so this involved walking around each lock and then reentering the canal. No major problems were encountered though considerable care was required in reentering the kayaks as the jetty levels were significantly higher than the canal water levels.
Waterways Ireland manage the Royal canal and produce an excellent Guide to the Royal Canal.
